At the end of October 2011, the board of directors of the Misano circuit unanimously decided to rename the circuit after the local boy who died too soon. This is the third name for the circuit which, when it was first conceived in 1969, was called Circuito Santamonica before taking on the name of the nearby seaside town and, today, paying tribute to Marco Simoncelli.
If the name changed, the track also underwent many changes, the latest of which were in 2007 when, under the advice of Valentino Rossi and Loris Capirossi, the direction of rotation was reversed to clockwise. Since then, the main focus has been on infrastructure work, including new grandstands, a new medical center and, above all, a redesigned pitlane, widened with a more secure entrance and exit.
The length of the track has now been increased to 4,226 meters, 800 meters more than the original layout. The track is at least 12 meters wide and has 12 turns, evenly distributed on the right (five of which are successive) and on the left. As the longest straight line is only 600 meters long, it is a winding track that requires excellent braking, good front-end stability and maximum grip on the corner.
Due to its configuration and selectivity, this circuit has secured the presence of MotoGP until 2025.
